Medicine River
Will Sampson, a half-Blackfoot photographer, returns to his hometown of Medicine River after years away, intending only a brief visit for his mother’s funeral. But the town—and its people—pull him back in. Through basketball games, community events, and unexpected relationships, Will slowly rebuilds his connection to the place and its stories. His best friend Harlen Bigbear nudges him into local life, encouraging him to join the Friendship Centre’s basketball team and even play matchmaker. As Will settles in, he begins to see the humor, resilience, and quiet strength that define the town’s Indigenous community.
Thomas King’s novel is a warm, witty, and deeply human portrait of contemporary First Nations life in Alberta. Told through anecdotes and flashbacks, Medicine River explores themes of identity, belonging, and healing with gentle humor and emotional depth. It’s a story of ordinary lives made extraordinary by connection, memory, and the quiet power of coming home.
