The Union Steamship Company stopped at almost every community and every inhabited cove from Vancouver to Alaska, including northern Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlottes, until December 31st, 1958. It earned its reputation as the "Lifetime of the Coast. "

Union Steamships Remembered is a people book, a lively collection of maritime memoirs and profiles. It reflects the personalities and experiences on many dedicated U.S.S. crew members, from Masters to Mess Boys, who laboured long and hard hours, often in treacherous weather conditions, to serve the people of the West Coast.

Art Twigg worked in the Purser's office aboard every ship in the fleet that plied the rugged coast between 1942 and 1950. He has interviewed more than 170 personnel over a five-year research period and collected well over 1,000 photographs, more than 400 of which are included in this book.
